The Problem

M.V. Electronic, a leading auto parts manufacturer from Sri Lanka, faced a significant challenge as they lacked an online presence, lacking a website to showcase their company profile to a global audience. This absence prevented them from effectively reaching potential customers in markets such as Thailand, India, and Japan. Moreover, the company faced another hurdle: the absence of a streamlined method to receive orders online, hindering their ability to expand their customer base and improve sales. Recognizing these obstacles, M.V. Electronic sought to address these issues by implementing an ecommerce solution that would enable them to present their product catalog online, allowing customers to effortlessly browse and order their products, ultimately propelling the company forward in the digital era.

Project Goal / Solution

The goal of the project is to establish a comprehensive online presence for M.V. Electronic by creating a professional website that effectively showcases the company's profile and product catalog. Additionally, the project aims to implement a robust ecommerce solution that enables customers from global markets such as Thailand, India, and Japan to easily browse, select, and order auto parts online. By achieving these objectives, the project intends to enhance M.V. Electronic's visibility, expand their customer reach, and streamline the ordering process to drive increased sales and business growth.

UX Design / System Design

UX Design

Crazy 8 method was used to draw paper wireframes. The best concepts were taken and converted in to mockups using Adobe XD.

Responsiveness was a key concern when creating mockups using Adobe XD. Accessibility was also a concern.

Prototypes were created to simulate the system requirements.

Prototypes and usability testing

5 selected members from the staff assumed that they are users and participated in the usability testing of prototypes. E-commerce orders were paid a special attention while testing. Following e-commerce functions were special concerns.

  • Add a product to cart
  • Cart view
  • Edit items in cart
  • Checkout and place order

Another one of the key features focused during testing was the service booking facility. This functionality was deemed crucial as it allowed users to conveniently schedule and book services in advance. Addressing this concern, the project aimed to implement a robust service booking system to enhance user experience and provide them with the convenience of pre-booking services according to their preferences and requirements.

Identified usability issues and solutions

  • No option to search products, or content in the website – Search icon was added sitewide to the top menu.
  • No option to access cart – cart icon was added to the top menu. This works sitewide.

System setup and web page creation

Several content management systems (CMS) were assessed to select the suitable system for this project. WordPress CMS was selected as the suitable CMS system. It also has e commerce capabilities when used with the WooCommerce plugin.

WordPress was setup on an AWS LightSail Server.

The mockups were converted to responsive web design through creating a custom WordPress theme.

System testing

The QA Testing team carried out an initial testing of all functions including the ones tested previously at the prototypes usability testing. This time the testing was on the actual system rather than the prototypes.

Special attention was given to responsiveness of the website. The site was tested on various device sizes using tools such as Chrome dev tools. Web site performance was analyzed using Google Page Speed Insights.

5 participants other than those who tested the prototypes were chosen. 3 from the staff + 2 from the management.

The same functions which were tested during the previous usability testing was tested on the actual system. Other functions such as contact forms were also tested at this point.

Identified QA issues and solutions

  • Slow loading pages – Increased the memory capacity of servers. Optimized images and page content using tools such as Photoshop
  • Site not sending emails – Fixed IMAP settings of email
  • SSL Certificate – Issues with SSL certificates were fixed

Implementation

The domain name mvelectronic.lk was pointed to the server through DNS setup.

User training was carried out for the stock admins, and content managers.

The items were entered in to the stock (E-commerce store)
